The football skills this camp enhanced on the field were clear and resulted in an obvious improvement. Equally, if not more important to me, was the off field mentoring, you each took the time to add life skills that were related to both improving his on-field performance and off field attitude. You all demonstrated the dual goal of developing better people while improving athletic skills. Lastly, thank you for letting me wander around during the training sessions and try to eavesdrop and pick up tips to improve my own coaching skills. The camp certainly met the high expectations I had going in. Awesome program, highly recommended.
In a time where schools are cutting back and removing extra curricular activities at school our kids are losing opportunities to actively participate in team sports and gain mentors in their sports fields. This makes programs such as yours even that much more invaluable. Thanks again!
On March 4, Elite Performance Academy and over 50 young football players successfully wrapped up Elite Football Academy 2013, brought to you by Tony Graham Infiniti Nissan.
For the second year in a row, Elite Performance Academy has been selected to train all hockey players participating in the CBC Hockey Nation tour stop in Ottawa.
Every year, a team of coaches and trainers travel coast to coast to provide Canadian communities with a hockey experience they will never forget. Coaches, parents and kids alike receive a rare opportunity to take part in a series of hockey clinics, guided by some of the game’s most seasoned coaches and players. Afterwards, they are run through a dry-land training session with the some of the top Strength & Conditioning professionals in each city. Coach Woodcock and Coach Ruiz will be coaching approximately 500 of Ottawa’s top young hockey stars, giving them a glimpse into the type of Elite training sessions that drives our athletes to success.
In addition, Coach Woodcock will be one of the featured speakers at Friday evenings Coaches Symposium. Coach Woodcock will be presenting on “Elite Performance Training: Philosophies for Developing Young Athletes”, and will be speaking alongside former Canadian Olympian Ron Davidson and legendary former NHL Coach Mike Keenan.
Stayed tuned here for the post-event wrap up, including pictures, sample exercises used during training, and key concepts from the Coaches Symposium.

These are just a few of the elements that go into Fitness and Body Building Competition Prep between a Coach and the Athlete. Elite Performance Coach, Donnie Ruiz, has been guiding these rare athletes through the jungle of competition preparation for the last 6 years and the results of his team speak volumes to the success of his well-developed process.
Our Fitness and Body Building competitors have run the full spectrum, from new athletes looking to compete for the first time, all the way up to guiding athletes to achieving Pro status. Members of #TeamEPA that Coach Ruiz has guided to success on the stage: Amber Nagle (WBFF Pro), Barbara Molyneaux (WBFF Pro/ OPA Regional Champion), Sophie Haddad (OPA Regional Champion), Lisa-Marie McDonald (Neutron Naturals 2nd Place) and Jason Dizzell (Toronto Super Show Junior Champion).
Our most recent competitor, Renee Meunier, has been training with Coach Ruiz for 2.5 years. Initially, Renee was looking for a different approach to her competition prep and some very definitive physical changes to present to the judges in her next show. After listening to her goals, and discussing a detailed plan, construction of a specific Nutrition and Training protocol began. Renee, better known as “Rain” implemented the plan and started to put in her signature, meticulous work ethic. An open mind to new nutrition strategies, along with many growls while lifting heavy iron, this little power ball of muscle rebuilt her physique and was ready to compete.
Rain’s love for the stage, combined with her dedication to the meticulous process, made for an outstanding season and this Fitness star achieved success on the figure stage. A second place at Serious About Fitness (SAF) Fitness Model, 3rd place at the International Drug Free Association (IDFA) fitness model, followed up by another 2nd place showing at IDFA in the Figure category. The future looks bright for Rain, as the great season qualified her to compete this year at the SAF Elite Pro Class. As we face another off season to build and refine her physique, the Athlete and Coach synergy will continue to develop as Rain is always looking to improve and build on the Elite mental approach to life that she applies to everything she does.
December has been an exciting time for several of our Elite Football athletes. Five of our longtime athletes officially signed their National Letters of Intent to play football for the Carleton University Ravens when they kick-off their comeback season in 2013. Lake Johnston, Stefano Napolitano, Cameron Stewart, Travis Troughton and Tyler Young have all been a part of #TeamEPA for several years, and we are extremely proud to have seen their development not only as athletes, but as young men and leaders on and off the field. In addition, starting QB and celebrated recruit Jesse Mills has been a dedicated part of #TeamEPA since the day he arrived in Ottawa
In discussing the Elite Performance Academy recruits, Carleton Head Coach Steve Sumarah described them as
National Capital Amateur Football Association (NCAFA) All-Star Bantam and Peewee teams face off this weekend in the annual all-star games at Carleton University’s Keith Harris Stadium.
#TeamEPA athletes once again led the way, as no less than 12 All-Stars are part of the Elite Performance and/or Elite Football Academy training program. Huge congratulations to each one of you – you’ve put in time and effort to get better at your craft, and this is the result of your hard work. Time to get in the Elite Off-Season Program and use this season as a building block for bigger and better things!
MARK HYMAN, MD is dedicated to identifying and addressing the root causes of chronic illness through a groundbreaking whole-systems medicine approach called Functional Medicine. He is a family physician, a four-time New York Times bestselling author, and an international leader in his field. Through his private practice, education efforts, writing, research, and advocacy, he empowers others to stop managing symptoms and start treating the underlying causes of illness, thereby tackling our chronic-disease epidemic.
In this article, Dr. Hyman discusses how it is part of our genetic makeup for our brains to fixate on high calorie foods, and how it is part of our survival instinct to eat as many calories as possible as often as possible. Unfortunately, with the prevalence of processed, high carbohydrate, and high sugar foods in today’s modern diet, this approach that worked so well for millions of years is now killing us.
Dr. Hyman provides us with 3 strategies to fight our primal urges to consume, and help us make our nutrition work for us instead of against us.
3 Ways to Reprogram your Brain
Balance blood sugar. Blood sugar highs and lows drive primitive food cravings. If you get famished between meals, that’s a sign that your blood sugar is crashing. When blood sugar is low, you’ll eat anything. To better balance blood sugar, eat a small meal or snack that includes healthy protein, like seeds or nuts, every 3 to 4 hours.
Eliminate liquid calories and artificial sweeteners. Early humans didn’t reach for soda or fruit juices when they got thirsty. Sodas are full of chemicals and high fructose corn syrup. Processed fruit juices are awash in sugar. Try sticking with water and green tea. Green tea contains plant chemicals that are good for your health. And, last but not least, don’t succumb to the diet-drink trap. The artificial sweeteners in diet drinks fool the body into thinking it is ingesting sugar, which creates the same insulin spike as regular sugar.
Eat a high-quality protein at breakfast. Ideally, you’re eating quality protein at every meal, but, if you need to prioritize one meal, choose breakfast. Studies show that waking up to a healthy protein, such as eggs, nuts, seeds, nut butters or a protein shake (see my UltraShake recipe) help people lose weight, reduce cravings and burn calories.
