For the second year in a row, Elite Performance Academy has been selected to train all hockey players participating in the CBC Hockey Nation tour stop in Ottawa.
Every year, a team of coaches and trainers travel coast to coast to provide Canadian communities with a hockey experience they will never forget. Coaches, parents and kids alike receive a rare opportunity to take part in a series of hockey clinics, guided by some of the game’s most seasoned coaches and players. Afterwards, they are run through a dry-land training session with the some of the top Strength & Conditioning professionals in each city. Coach Woodcock and Coach Ruiz will be coaching approximately 500 of Ottawa’s top young hockey stars, giving them a glimpse into the type of Elite training sessions that drives our athletes to success.
In addition, Coach Woodcock will be one of the featured speakers at Friday evenings Coaches Symposium. Coach Woodcock will be presenting on “Elite Performance Training: Philosophies for Developing Young Athletes”, and will be speaking alongside former Canadian Olympian Ron Davidson and legendary former NHL Coach Mike Keenan.
Stayed tuned here for the post-event wrap up, including pictures, sample exercises used during training, and key concepts from the Coaches Symposium.
Elite Performance Academy’s Director of Athlete Development, Pat Woodcock, is the Head Strength Coach for SSNCanada, the Sports Streaming Network. SSN is Canada’s Home for University Sport, drawing upwards of 1 million website hits a month with live streams of CIS sports and on-air reporting.
Coach Woodcock provides viewers with an Elite Training Tip of the Week, filmed on location at the Elite Performance Athletic Complex in Kanata.
This week’s Elite Training Tip is the Split Squat. The Split Squat is a Unilateral (1 limb at a time) exercise that involves standing in a split position and moving up and down on the front leg without moving the feet. Splits Squats are often confused with Lunges, the difference being that when performing Lunges the feet do not stay stationary, but move back to the start position with every rep.
At Elite Performance Academy, we use a variety of Split Squat variations in our programs in order to help our athletes achieve Structural Balance in the legs, which means that muscles are in balance with all other muscle groups. According to world-renowned Strength Coach Charles Poliquin,

As the summer comes to a close, we are beginning to see the incredible impact our Elite Athlete Development Program is having. After only 2 full years of developing young athletes, Elite Performance Academy is now represented by scholarship athletes at 6 different CIS institutions, including McGill, McMaster, St. Mary’s, Waterloo, St. Francis Xavier, and Ottawa. Best of luck to our guys who put in the work this summer: Taylor and Dallon Kuprowski, Corbin Maxwell, Spencer Brown, Cameron Stewart, Vince Zuccala, and Kurtis Pankow.
In addition, 3 of our younger athletes have earned scholarships at prestigious prep school Ashbury College here in Ottawa. Congrats to Jake Hamm, Julien Moore, and Sascha Jammes on seeing great rewards already for all your hard work.
Several of these athletes have been part of our program from the very beginning, and we are extremely proud of the accolades they have all received thus far. Can’t wait to see what the future brings for each of you.
