OVFL Week 1 – Elite Report

Week 1 of the OVFL (Ontario Varsity Football League) featured some exciting action league began play for the 2014 season. Elite Performance Academy has a strong presence on the Ottawa OVFL teams and many of our athletes were on display this past weekend.

Myers Riders Varsity

The Myers Riders Varsity won their first game of the season by a score of 51-18 over the Kingston Grenadiers Varsity. Playing in the game were a total of fourteen Elite Performance Academy athletes and alumni.

On defense, EPA’s John Allarie and alum Patrick Pankow and combined for a total of 9 points, with 3 assisted tackles for Allarie, and 3 solo tackles for Pankow.

Quarterback Matthew Duffy had a great game as he threw for a total of 218 yards, with 16 completed passes and 3 touchdowns. EPA fullback Will Johnson and running back alum Keenan Tanti and each had solid starts to their season as they rushed for a 2 and 67 yards respectively. EPA athletes and wide receivers Jesse Skucas and Evan Yourth each received 1 pass for a total of 14 and 5 yards respectively.

The Myers Varsity play the Markham Raiders at home next, on May 31.

Cumberland Panthers Varsity

The Cumberland Panthers Varsity lost their first game of the season by a score of 23-28 to the Metro Toronto Wildcats Varsity. Elite Performance Academy featured one athlete in this game, alum Justin Poitras.

Quarterback Justin Poitras had an excellent first game as he threw for a total of 225 yards, with 12 completed passes, which was good enough for 2 touchdowns.

Myers Riders Juniors

The Myers Riders Juniors won their first game of the season by a score of 38-15 over the Kingston Grenadiers Juniors. Playing in the game were a total of twelve Elite Performance Academy athletes and alumni.

On defense, EPA athletes Ian Macaulay and Alejandro Politis combined for a total of 7 points with 2 assisted tackles and 1 solo tackle for Macauley and 3 assisted tackles for Politis.

EPA alum and quarterback Jacob Spinella threw for a total of 144 yards with 10 completed passes but no touchdowns in his first game of the season.

Running backs Brian Franklin and AJ Oickle rushed for a total 62 and 32 yards and 1 touchdown each. Franklin also had 3 catches for a total of 66 yards in receiving.

The Myers Riders Bantam won their first game of the season by a score of 44-0 over the Kingston Grenadiers Bantam. Playing in the game was a total of nine Elite Performance Academy athletes, all alumni of our Junior Athlete Development program.

Defensive lineman Steven Schwartz assisted on 4 tackles and had 1 solo tackle for a combined 6 points. Lastly, defensive back Colin Henley-Vachon assisted on 2 tackles and ran a total of 6 yards following an interception for a total of 8 points. Quarterback James Keenan threw a total of 99 yards and completed 3 passes, which was good enough for 1 touchdown. Finally, wide receiver Terrell Brown received 2 punts and ran a total of 13 yards.
